About Us

About the Program

Our mission is to improve the paddling skills of our group, race to the highest level we can and have a fun while doing it!  Our race season starts in May and runs until October with races all over British Columbia plus road trips to the Gorge, California and Hawaii.  We are a race program run by paddlers for paddlers.  As such, crew selections are done by committee with input from the coach and to be considered for a crew you need to participate...we don't like parachuting!

One of our goals for the mens outrigger program is to develop a culture which will provide equal opportunity for everyone (in our Ohana). This includes providing equal access to available coaching. Along with that culture our hope is that the paddlers take ownership in the program, meaning you get back as much as you put into it.

We encourage members to have an open mind and willingness to learn/change, and a commitment (time on the water) to apply what they learn.

Steering Committee

The program is organized by a seven member steering committee.  The steering committee members are chosen by the program members annually so that the committee is representative of the group.

The steering committee is responsible for:

- working with the coach to select crews for races (see Crew Selections page for more details)

- communicating to the program members the details of upcoming races, program updates and practice information (and the occasional social event too!)

- organizing trailers, canoes, fees, events for races

Most importantly the steering committee is here to represent the paddlers of the Mens Outrigger program!  Naturally we practice and race as much as we can.  We all like paddling too.

Feedback is really important so if you have questions, commments, concerns, kudos (hey, we're not above getting compliments...or passing them along) you can always talk to us after practice or send us an email!

Crew Selections

Crew selections are made by the steering committee with input from the coach.  The primary factors considered during crew selections are blend, fitness and experience.  Check out the Crew Selections page for more details.

About the Club

FCRCC is the largest paddling club in Canada. Our members train in and race dragon boat, outrigger canoe, and flatwater at all levels and ages. The club offers a comprehensive set of training programs, a tremendous number and variety of boats, and numerous opportunities to race both locally and internationally. Our mixed premier dragon boat team won gold in the 2007 World Dragon Boat Championships. Our men's and women's outrigger teams compete regularly at Molokai, the mecca of outrigger racing, and the Catalina channel crossing.

The club has two locations: Alder Bay at Granville Island, where we benefit from the facilities of the False Creek Community Centre for hot showers, sauna, and access to the fitness room; and the Burrard Compound, near the Burrard Marina, where we keep our OC6s ready to head out into the wind and waves of English Bay.
